Job Details:

I. GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Chief of Ophthalmology or his designated physicians this position will practice optometry within the scope of the professional standards and law. Provides primary eye care within a multidisciplinary setting.

II. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs routine and comprehensive eye exams with the aid of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents (D.P.A.). Such an exam would include, but is not limited to: History, Entrance Exams (Pupils, EOMS, Color Vision, Stereopsis, Binocular Testing), Slit Lamp Exam, Tonometry, Refraction, Retinal Exam, and evaluation of optic nerves. Additional testing would be done where indicated. Some such testing would be: Amsler Grid, Keratometry, Exophthalmometry, Ultrasonography, Corneal Topography, Visual Field testing, Optic Nerve imaging, Fundus and Disc photography. Level of examination will vary based upon location and specialized functions in the department.

2. Interprets the results of a routine and comprehensive exam, to identify pathology, and to make the appropriate referrals when necessary. To follow patients with limited pathology who require treatment and / or monitoring using approved Optometric Therapeutic Pharmacological Agents when necessary

3. Evaluates patients for contact lenses, cosmetic as well as therapeutic: including but not limited to keratoconic, pediatric aphakic, adult aphakic and bandage lenses.

6. Documents patients charts and prepares billing documents for presentation to insurance agencies or patient payment.

7. Maintains insurance credentials to allow for insurance plan participation.

8. Participates in on-going department clinical quality assurance programs.

9. Maintains collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.

10. Performs other similar job related duties as required or directed.

11. Supervises daily work flow and activities of the ophthalmic technicians in refractive department.

12. Hires, evaluates and disciplines ophthalmic technicians in collaboration with administrative and medical leadership.

III. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

A. AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes:

Knowledge of growth and development

Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care

Provide age specific communication

B. JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

1. Maintain current competency skills to perform duties as an optometrist.

2. Must attend CME programs necessary to maintain licensure.

C. EDUCATION:

1. Doctor of Optometry

2. Completion of American Academy of Optometry approved residency program for 1 year is preferred. This should include additional training in diagnosing and managing glaucoma, post-cataract surgery care, retinal diseases, or low vision.

D. EXPERIENCE:

1. One year of experience in a optometry position. An internship could be applicable.

2. Family Practice experience or interest in family practice strongly preferred

3. Interest in Contact Lens / Ortho K preferred

4. Residency Training preferred

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

E. LICENSES,ETC. :

1. Must be board certified in Optometry in the state of Massachusetts and possess a Massachusetts License.

2. Must be an approved Diagnostic Pharmaceutical Agent (D.P.A.) and Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agent (T.P.A.).

3. State of Massachusetts Glaucoma Certification preferred

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Due to the high volume of patients and the interaction with a wide variety of personalities, one must be able to work at a fast, accurate and efficient pace in an often stressful environment.

2. Normal office work environment for an outpatient clinic patient care area.

3. Work requires frequent patient treatment and use of medical instruments and equipment.
