Job Details:

Under general supervision of the Shift Commander, this position is responsible for the front line supervision of Public Safety Officers including Sworn Personnel and Dispatchers in their performance of all duties and responsibilities related to the day to day protection and safety of patients, staff and visitors; as well as the security of hospital assets and information. Also responsible for basic healthcare public safety duties, as well as enforcement of the Criminal Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Special State Police Officer under MGL 22C-63 or Boston Special Officer under BPD Rule 400. This position could have additional responsibilities assigned at the direction of the Operations Manager and Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • In addition to being a front line leader, performs basic public safety and police duties such as conducting internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds, responding to and reporting on both routine and emergency calls for service, restraining violent patients and/or visitors; monitors assigned area for suspicious activity, prepares and completes all daily logs and incident reports and ensures accurate and detailed reports; and screening vendors and visitors entering the facility, ensuring compliance with established procedures.
  • As appropriate, makes arrests and enforces the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including booking, arraignment and court prosecution of arrestees, securing of evidence and conducting searches and seizures in compliance with Massachusetts General Laws and applicable court decisions.
  • Identifies issues, concerns, or conflicts requiring resolution; and completely and impartially reviews each situation to obtain the necessary facts to formulate a resolution. Attempts to resolve situations within his/her immediate control, and communicates these situations or those outside of their control/capacity, to superiors and actively participates in the response. Obtains all necessary facts to resolve issues, conflicts, and concerns within their control in an impartial manner; reports those problems outside of their control to a superior for resolution.
  • Provides excellent customer service by assisting and interacting with patients, visitors, and other Medical Center staff in a manner that conveys the highest level of dignity, respect, courtesy, and professionalism. Maintains composure under stressful circumstances. Strives to de-escalate situations when confronted with uncooperative or belligerent individuals.
  • This position may require assisting senior officers in the performance of one or more of the following additional duties:
  • Community Outreach assignments, such as Loss & Crime Prevention, Community Policing
  • Support assignments, such as functioning as a backup/relief dispatcher, Lost and Found/Property Custodian, Department Equipment/Vehicle Custodian.
  • Actively participates and coordinates investigations, conducts interviews, reviews recorded video, prepares case files, catalogs and secures evidence as required.
  • Assists with all emergencies and disasters that may affect the Medical Center, including: crowd control; evacuations and other responsibilities as directed by supervisors.
  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, as well as to help foster a positive work environment
  • Assists the Shift Commander by continually monitoring staff activity; coaches, counsels and commends employees, as appropriate, on performance matters. Ensures, regardless of specific assignment during a shift, that all personnel are performing in accordance with policies and established guidelines. Makes recommendations for corrective action, additional training, and commendations to the Shift Commander and Operations Manager.
  • In the absence of a Shift Commander or ranking officer, is responsible for the supervision of the departments operations; including the assignment of personnel, communication within the department, and the on-scene command of incidents/events responded to. In the absence of the Sergeant or management staff, acts as a senior representative of the department.
  • As assigned, functions as a training officer for newly hired public safety officers.
  • As assigned and certified, conducts department-wide training sessions/courses.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Job Qualifications:

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Appointment as a Special State Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under MGL c.22C Section 63 or as a Boston Special Officer under BPD Rule 400.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Must successfully complete all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions based on the information present, and take appropriate action based on the information available.
  • Physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined above.
  • Physically able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, able to work odd and irregular hours, (Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, overnights).
  • Must show emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy and tact with poise and self- confidence devoid of negative remarks.
  • Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous and disciplined
  • Must possess a valid drivers license
  • Is able to favorably complete Federally mandated criminal background checks as well as those required by the Massachusetts State Police or the Boston Police Department related to the licensing of Special State Police Officers // Boston Special Officers.

EDUCATION:

  • Academic Requirements:
  • Rule 400 Officers: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • SSPOs: Associates degree or higher in Criminal Justice required.
  • Graduate of an approved Law Enforcement Training Program:
  • Rule 400 Officers: Graduate of an approved Rule 400 Course of training
  • SSPOs: Graduate of an approved Reserve Intermittent or Full Time Police Academy certified by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC).
  • Ability to read and write at a proficient level.
  • Basic Computer Skills required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior military, security or police experience required
  • At least 6-8 months experience as a Public Safety Officer II at Tufts Medical Center.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory capacity preferred

OTHER:

  • Possesses a valid drivers license

An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
