SUMMARY:

The Development Officer, Communications and Stewardship, will be an integral member of McLean's fundraising department, acting as a primary writer for donor communications (including strategic fundraising proposals, case development, personalized acknowledgment letters and stewardship reports), and supporting efforts to meet annual fundraising and campaign goals. This position will report to the Associate Director of Development. The position requires an ability to understand scientific research and write for a variety of authors and audiences.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In coordination with the associate director, draft produce high-level development & stewardship communications content, including acknowledgments, narrative and financial reports, major donor correspondence, proposals, newsletters, videos, campaign communications, email blasts, web content, event-related remarks, pre- and post-event messaging, including drafting material for executive leadership, senior managers, and key volunteers.
  • Manage a system for reporting on all major individual, foundation and corporate gifts, including tracking deliverables in the donor database; interfacing with research or clinical staff to produce timely, quality reports; and coordinating donor visits with senior development office staff and key McLean personnel (president and psychiatrist in chief, senior researchers and/or clinicians, etc.).
  • Conduct interviews with leadership, faculty and staff and translate complex source material into clear, accurate and lay-friendly prose.

  • Oversee an extensive acknowledgment system, including individual responsibility for creating a large volume of letters and a managing a detailed tracking system.
  • Track and report on endowed funds on an annual basis to inform donors of the use of their donations and the value and growth of their endowments.
  • Maintain customer service focus with all projects, keeping gift officers and other stakeholders informed of status of projects and content.
  • Provide editing support to other development office staff on a broad range of donor communications and written materials.
  • Remain informed of industry & hospital activities, news and information to curate communications appropriate for donors and prospects.
  • Other activities as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five or more years of experience in communications or stewardship/donor relations, preferably in development or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Strong dedication to the mission and programs of McLean Hospital.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including the ability to distill and effectively communicate complex source material related to medicine, science and technology.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage projects with multiple processes, stakeholders and timelines, as well as work independently in a self-directed manner and in collaboration with others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate collaborative work with development staff, senior management, medical staff, donors and volunteers.
  • Mature, professional judgment.
  • Warm, professional demeanor; positive and helpful attitude; flexible, with an optimistic approach to new challenges.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, collegial atmosphere.
  • Basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes.
