I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Provides patient care. Assesses health status, implements care plans, documents interventions and evaluates patient progress following standard procedures.
2. Coordinates patient flow and prepares patient for examination. Takes and records vital signs and EKG's. Documents intake questions. Assists physician and others in clinical procedures as required or directed. Performs other basic clinical procedures such as venipuncture.
3. Performs basic office laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, urine culture, , pregnancy tests, throat cultures and related procedures. Draws blood as required or directed.
4. Returns patient calls and documents in patient record as required or directed by the RN or physician.
5. Obtains laboratory results. Ensures results are brought to the attention of the physicians and others as appropriate.
6. Maintains records, reports, logs and other statistical information as required or directed.
7. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, making phone call and related duties as required or directed.
8. Maintains assigned departmental and/or clinical supplies. Assures accurate inventory of supplies based on approved levels. Rotates stock as required. Initiates requisitions for re-supply or special items.
9. Meets established productivity standards.
10. Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.
11. Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.
12. The individual must support the mission, vision, and goals of HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital and serve as a role model for CARES values.
13. Adheres to change control processes.
14. Participates in cross training to optimize department resources.
15. Demonstrates excellent attendance and actively participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions as required.
16. Demonstrates a friendly, responsive, service-minded attitude to all internal and external customers.
17. Communicates ideas effectively. Shares information and keeps others properly informed. Gives, and is open to useful feedback.
18. Adheres to the HealthAlliance Hospital Code of Conduct and Behavior Standards and dress code.
19. Complies with established environment of care/safety policies and procedures and all health and safety requirements.
20. Maintains and fosters an organized, clean and safe work environment.
21. Contributes to the development and application of process improvements.
22. Maintains a collaborative, team relationship with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the group's achievement of goals and to help foster a positive work environment.
23. Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices and reads and responds to e mails on a regular basis.
24. Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.
25. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
26. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
27. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
28. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
29. Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
30. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
All responsibilities are essential job functions.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Certification as a Medical Assistant is required within 6 months of hire and must be maintained.

Preferred:
1. High School diploma or equivalent preferred, plus completion of accredited program in Medical Assisting at an accredited school.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Knowledge of office and laboratory procedures required.

Preferred:
1. Minimum of three years of relevant experience is preferred.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
