Responsibilities:

The physician assistants work in collaboration with Tufts Medical Center/Melrose-Wakefield Hospital neurosurgeons to provide comprehensive care to both outpatients and inpatients at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital experiencing a wide variety of conditions involving the brain and spine. The neurosurgical physician assistant works as a strong collaborative team member in the operating room, inpatient wards, and outpatient clinics. The position involves being a first assistant to the neurosurgical attending in all surgical procedures. Currently there are no resident physicians at the Melrose Wakefield site. Most procedures performed at Melrose Wakefield Hospital are spinal procedures.

The inpatient service involves intensive care and floor level patients in addition to emergency room and off-service consultations, including traumas. The neurosurgical physician assistant also assists the attending neurosurgeons with outpatient clinic visits, independent pre and postop evaluation, and independent evaluation of patients for triage to the neurosurgical attending. To succeed in the role, the physician assistant needs excellent critical thinking skills and efficiency. The PA must demonstrate initiative to complete daily tasks and address the continual needs of the patients and their families.

Proficiency in general medicine is required. The neurosurgery service functions as the primary team for patients, rather than a consulting service, requiring comfort with management of active chronic medical illnesses and postoperative conditions, such as cardiac, respiratory, infectious, and endocrinologic management.

Ability to independently evaluate patients, order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies and initiate clinical intervention based on the results of those studies is expected.

Strong interpersonal skills are crucial for effective communication both within the interdisciplinary care team and for coordination of care withconsulting services.

In addition to weekly operative cases, the role involves floor and ICU procedural skills such as, but not limited to, drain removal, suturing and arterial line placement.

The schedule will be four 10-hour day shifts per week. Infrequent weekend and night coverage may be required depending on service needs.

Who you are:

  • Graduate of an accredited and/or approved Physician Assistant program

  • NCCPA certified

  • ACLS certified

  • Current license as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration

  • Prior experience in neurosurgery preferred but not an absolute requirement

  • A team player who is excited to work cooperatively with a wide range of stakeholders and disciplines to champions world class patient satisfaction and support
