SUMMARY

Maintains and assists in management of medical equipment by installing, calibrating, repairing, and inspecting medical equipment and solving the most complex technical problems in the field. Performs routine scheduled and preventive maintenance and performs repairs up to and including the diagnosis and repair of the most complex level of technical problems. Coordinates evaluations and installations of equipment. Assists in development of procedures. Identifies system problems and implements solutions. Teaches clinical and technical staff basic repair, troubleshooting and design.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Follows departmental Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) procedures, inspects newly acquired medical devices and systems for safety and function and attaches and assigns appropriate control numbers and labels to medical devices. Acquires the necessary information for accurate database inventory entry.

  1. Conducts complete performance assurance and electrical safety testing. Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance on medical devices as required. Assists in the development of testing protocols.
  1. Responds to medical equipment problems in clinical areas or research areas; evaluates, troubleshoots, and corrects problems up to and including those requiring novel solutions and expert diagnostic skills, involving unfamiliar equipment, and having the highest level of acuity and complexity. Determines the need to remove and/or replace malfunctioning medical devices from service and implements accordingly.
  1. Performs equipment repairs and calibrations with the highest degree of complexity or requiring expert diagnostic and repair skills.
  1. Participates in installations and updates of medical devices when required, including those requiring software revision. Provides technical feedback for device evaluations.
  1. Makes periodic rounds of assigned clinical areas to assess operation of medical devices and systems. Notes trends and develops and implements solutions validated by the Team Leader to address recurring problems.
  1. Instructs clinical and technical staff and other support personnel on the operation, safe use, care and handling, and user maintenance procedures for medical equipment.
  1. Instructs department and other equipment technical staff on testing, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of medical equipment and basic design and theory of the same. Serve as a technical resource to BMETs for difficult tasks.
  1. Using a computer database, sets the example in documentation of work performed in terms of quality, thoroughness, accuracy, and timeliness. Documents and maintains accurate and current inventory records of all replacement and repair parts.
  1. Attends and satisfactorily completes advanced training courses on operating, testing, maintaining, and repairing medical devices or systems. Disseminates the newly acquired knowledge to team members, department, and clinical users as appropriate. Leverages this knowledge to improve our procedures and systems for managing and maintaining medical equipment.
  1. May assign, direct, and inspect the tasks of BMETs and interns, and coordinate implementation of projects.
  1. Using data indicators, intuition, and/or other resources, identifies system, safety, and quality problems, suggests solutions, and provides information that leads to change in department and on teams.
  1. Under supervision of an engineer or department leadership, may assist in and/or conduct investigations of clinical incidents involving medical equipment.
  1. May serve on departmental and hospital committees.
  1. Performs on-call function (schedule rotation) providing in-house repairs and assistance as needed.
  1. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Experience Minimum Required
    • 5yrs experience working with various biomedical equipment in a hospital setting.
  • Experience Preferred/Desired
    • Must have a high level of competence in repair of mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic, and/or computer medical technology to sufficiently diagnose and repair medical devices and systems.
    • Sufficient technical points that demonstrate technical proficiency to the level that meets Senior BMET standards.
    • Certification desired.

  • Education Minimum Required
    • Some college or Associate's Degree; AS in Biomedical Equipment Technology or equivalent level of education or experience.
  • Education Preferred/Desired
    • Bachelor's Degree

  • Special Skills Minimum Required
    • Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with team members and customers at all levels.
    • Demonstrates a strong ability to perform advanced testing and troubleshooting of medical devices involving specialized and generic test equipment and software diagnostic tools.
    • Possesses a high level of understanding of electrical and mechanical biomedical safety principles.
    • Shows self-motivation and performs in a highly independent manner with minimal supervision working within the broad scope of established department policies, procedures, and goals.
    • Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively, and ability to occasionally maneuver and lift heavy equipment.
    • Ability to endure long periods of walking and standing.
    • Strong ability to learn advanced equipment maintenance, operating procedures, and repair procedures from training materials and courses.
    • Ability to perform and assist leaders during routine, emergency, or other stressful situations.
    • Ability to use computer-based tools at a moderate to high level, e.g., novel query of a database.
    • Strong ability to teach other technical and clinical personnel.
    • Strong general knowledge of human physiology and biomedical instrumentation principles.
    • Ability to manage technical projects.
