I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Provides peer recovery support services to pregnant women with Opiate Use Disorder (OUD) in primary care, behavioral health sites, home and community settings and will assist patients in achieving sustained recovery.
2. Develops a trusting relationship. Maintains ongoing patient support regardless of relapse and will serve as a motivator, ally, role model, problem-solver, and advocate for patients with substance use disorders. Addresses barriers to successful recovery. Ensures patients' feedback related to service delivery improvements is reported to project coordinator and other project staff.
3. Collaborates with team members (treatment providers and collateral contacts) on an ongoing basis to discuss and coordinate patient care and treatment. Employs evidence-based practices.
4. Use Motivational Interviewing techniques to explore ambiguity and facilitate treatment.
5. Supports project participants in developing a recovery/relapse prevention plan, assists them in reaching their goals and objectives, and assist to identify a recovery support network.
6. Works with hospital and community partners to identify pregnant women with an Opioid use disorder in need of treatment.
7. Becomes knowledgeable in evidence-based practices, Trauma Informed Care, Seeking Safety, The Nurturing Program and the Recovery Coach Model. Conduct active outreach efforts to encourage attendance and participation in recovery oriented, self-help groups.
8. Facilitates access to services and resources including but not limited to housing, employment, child care, education, criminal justice related needs including probation and CORI issues, assistance with child protection/child welfare issues. Assists with making connections to Primary and Specialty care, dental and mental health services as well as human services, applying for benefits, Early Intervention, WIC and similar services and support mentee's in preparing for meetings with probation officers, social workers, child protection workers. Focuses on supporting and not on arranging and coordinating services or 'doing things for" the patient. Accompany patients to appointments and meetings with collaterals.
9. Participates in data collection and reporting as directed for quality assurance and program evaluation. Records timely and maintains records of all patient encounters in AHP monthly log in accordance with state and federal confidentiality laws.
10. Systematically reviews the caseload with the supervisor each week, focusing on new patients and patients who are having difficulties.

II. Position Qualifications:


License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Recovery Coach certification (CARC). If not certified upon hire, employee must obtain certification within 3 months of hire or will be subject to termination. Must complete any required annual recovery coach training.
3. Valid driver's license. Car in good working order, insured with a valid Massachusetts Inspection sticker.

Preferred:

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Person with lived experience with a minimum of 3 years in sustained recovery.
2. Comfort with multiple pathways to recovery from OUD and willingness to embrace a patient-centered approach that recognizes an individual's preferences and autonomy ("recovery by any means necessary"). Comfort in working in both medical and social service settings. Clinical skills in motivational enhancement strategies. Ability to provide accurate feedback without judgment or discomfort. Flexibility to adapt to unforeseen needs or circumstances. Rotating beeper on call responsibility.
3. Knowledge of medication assisted treatment.
4. Excellent organizational skills. Strong oral and written skills, as well as strong advocacy, interpersonal, facilitation, and leadership skills as a mentor.
5. Ability to multitask and work under pressure.
6. Effective use of the Internet and Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Power point and outlook.
7. Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, physicians, social workers, and nurses.
8. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients/families and staff.

Preferred:
1. Previous training in peer recovery support role.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
