The Town of Needham is seeking an enthusiastic individual to fill the part-time position of Children's Reference Librarian at the Needham Free Public Library.


It is an exciting time to join the Needham Free Public Library team! Our new Strategic Plan for FY2023-2027 positions the library to continue to meet the community's needs for years to come. In addition, our recent Library Space Utilization Study reimagines the library's interior space in four phases to enhance the work we do for our patrons and the community. Along with diverse collections, plentiful programming, and great services, the Needham Free Public Library is on track to be the go-to place for new and current library workers.

Hours: 6-15 hours per week, depending on weekend rotation

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support at the Children's Reference Desk, supplying patrons of the Needham Free Public Library with accurate and reliable information about a wide range of topics with consideration to the Library's overall goals of equity and inclusion.
  • Advise and assist individuals in selecting, locating, and utilizing library materials, answering reference questions and providing reader's advisory.
  • Assist patrons with using library catalog, computers, Chromebooks, STEM materials and other technology.
  • Create booklists and book displays.
  • Support in book processing.
Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS), or currently enrolled in an MLS program with a concentration in Children's Services
  • Familiarity with automated library systems
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and efficiently.
  • Capability to adapt to new technologies as required
  • Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with the general public, especially children and their caretakers
  • Experience working with children and/or public library experience a plus
Supplemental Information

Work Schedule:

Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:30-5:30 pm
Some Saturdays, 9 am-1 pm or 1-5 pm
Saturdays 9 am-5 pm (One in four Saturdays, works out to one to two a month)
Every other Sunday 1-6 pm (1-5 pm during the months of July and August)
